OPPI received eight (8) nominations for five (5) Council Director positions. OPPI is asking members to select five Council Directors from the nominations received. For more information on the Call for Nominations for OPPI Council, please visit our webpage.

Awards can be given to members honouring their accumulated service over a long period of time, performing a key or integral role with a special project or program, and representing OPPI and the planning profession extraordinarily well in a provincial or national forum.

Michael-Kusner.jpgThe School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University is saddened to announce the passing of our Founder and Inaugural Director Michael Kusner. Michael passed away peacefully at home at age 90 after a life spent challenging conventional thinking about societal change, economic development and urban design.

Your Professional Journey

DON'T DELAY, START TRACKING YOUR 2019 CPL
CPL.jpg
With the summer in full swing, and plenty of district events taking place, if members haven't started tracking their 2019 CPL there's no better time to start!

Members are asked to complete 18 learning units each year. A minimum of 9 learning units must be structured and a maximum of 9 learning units can be self-directed. One learning unit equals one hour of direct planning-related learning (with some exceptions). Some examples include participating in district events, attending OPPI's annual conference, reading viewing previous webinars and videos in our Digital Learning platform, reading the Planning Exchange blog, attending other conferences and in-person educational sessions.

OPPI's CPL Program Guide is a great place to learn more about the program, learning activities and units and their formats. If you have started tracking your CPL, it's not too late to develop a learning strategy and learning path to keep up-to-date with your credits and stay on track with the development and maintenance of your core competencies.

For more information and to start tracking your 2019 CPL units, please visit OPPI's website

COMPLAINTS AND DISCIPLINE COMMITTEES UPDATE

OPPI-Symbol.jpgOn January 1, 2019, the new OPPI by-law came into effect, and with it a new complaints and discipline process. The newly-created (newly-separated) Complaints Committee and Discipline Committee have both been busy since then.

The Complaints Committee has met several times, reviewing complaints received, responses submitted by members, and investigation results.

The Discipline Committee is called into action much less frequently, as it typical for other regulated professions too. However, it has issued a new Complaint Form and new Rules of Procedure, to align with the new process.

Information on the new process is available on OPPI's website, and OPPI may offer a webinar in the future. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to contact the Registrar at standards@ontarioplanners.ca.

Building RPP

THE ISSUE/THE SOLUTION: PLANNING IN PRACTICE
Dundas-Place.jpg

As part of OPPI's work to build the RPP brand to the public, decision-makers, elected officials and
stakeholders, we are profiling case studies on our new website that position RPPs as community leaders, experts and focusing on inspiring communities across the province. We need your help to spread the word!

We have a new case study on OPPI's website to share:  Do you know someone who is grappling with this issues right now? Is there someone at your
office/municipality/consultancy that would benefit from knowing what RPPs are doing? Share our members' success stories with your colleagues, friends, key contacts at your workplace and everywhere else!

Feel free to share each case study on social media and via email as they are published. More case studies will be developed in 2019, so stay tuned for another batch of great examples of planners inspiring their local communities! If you have any questions or would like to share your story, please email communications@ontarioplanners.ca.

URBAN RESILIENCY: WHAT IS IT AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
August-2019-Blog-post-cover-photo.jpg
In this month's Planning Exchange blog, a team of Master of Planning in Urban Development students at Ryerson University prepared an Urban Resiliency Strategy as part of a client-based studio assignment. Their task was to research and catalog case studies of urban resiliency projects and practices, and develop a set of best practices and resiliency principles to be applied to future planning processes. The second phase of their work involved applying our analysis to the Scarborough Centre area - more about that later.

INDIGENOUS PLANNING PERSPECTIVES RESOURCE LIST

IPPTF-Cover.jpgOne of the recommendations of OPPI's Indigenous Planning Perspectives Task Force (IPPTF) report is for OPPI to facilitate access to resources and learning on Indigenous topics. While learning on Indigenous topics will take many forms over several years, OPPI and its IPPTF has produced a list of resources to facilitate learning in these areas.

This list is available on OPPI's website and members are encouraged to take a look.

This list is not intended to be comprehensive and will be reviewed from time to time to reflect the availability of new, or revised resources. If you have a suggestion for another resource that would be beneficial to professional planners, please contact OPPI's Education Manager, Ryan Des Roches.

THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING THE BILL 108 WEBINAR WITH WEIRFOULDS AND OPPI

OPPI recently partnered with WeirFoulds, LLP to deliver a livestreamed panel discussion on Bill 108, which explored the proposed changes to the Planning Act, Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Act, Ontario Heritage Act, the Development Charges Act, and whether they will have the intended effect, and what the unintended consequences might be.

OPPI would like to thank former OPPI President Andrea Bourrie, WeirFoulds' Denise Baker, Barnet Kussner and Sylvain Rouleau, Daryl Keleher from Altus Group, Julie Tyndorf from ERA Architects for their participation, and members for attending in-person and via livestream.

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO STUDENT ASSOCIATION - URBAN CHANGES: A DISCUSSION ON SHIFTS IN URBAN POLICY
Waterloo-Event-1.jpg
July 9, 2019 saw the first Urban Changes panel discussion being held at the University of Waterloo with the Planning Student Association (PSA) working alongside the School of Planning to communicate the impacts of the incoming Bill 108. Speakers included Dan Currie of MHBC, Filiz Tamer of Dillion Consulting, Gary Muller of Durham Region, and Eric Davis of Miller Thomson LLP, facilitated by Professor Jeff Casello. The panel broke down the impacts Bill 108 would have on the Canadian urban planning sphere with discussions ranging from development changes to ecological concerns.

Over 65 students, professors and practicing professionals were in attendance. The Planning Student's Society would like to thank everyone who was in attendance and is excited to continue moving forward with events that connect students to the professional world.

OPPI REMINDS MEMBERS OF ITS WEEKLY DISTRICT EBLAST

weekly-eblast.jpgStarting in February, OPPI launched its weekly district eblast for members. Instead of receiving individual event eblasts, district events are consolidated into one weekly eblast format for members to read every Wednesday.

Members will only receive these eblasts when their district has an event to promote, needs to send out a reminder or a thank you note to members in a given week.

Since the launch of this eblast, we have received helpful feedback from members and from District leaders, but if members have any questions or additional feedback they would like to share, please contact OPPI at communications@ontarioplanners.ca

Our eblasts are published every Wednesday so keep an eye out for them in your inbox!
