October 2019 Issue

We Are OPPI

OPPI19: BEYOND25 BEGINS TODAY!

OPPI19: Beyond25 kicks off today! We look forward to seeing so many members at the Beanfield Centre in Toronto over the course of the next three days for Ontario's most popular planning event of the year.

This year, OPPI celebrates the 25th anniversary of the RPP designation, and to commemorate this milestone we are asking members to help OPPI face change head on and guide Ontario into the next quarter century. We will explore key issues that reach beyond borders, continue to significantly impact planning in Ontario, and will continue to be with us over the next 25 years: Uneven Growth, Climate Change and Technology.

OPPI is please to offer an exciting program for members and it all starts with our keynote speakers: Gregg Lintern, RPP (day 1), Ramona Pringle (Day 2) and Mikael Colville-Andersen (Day 3). To see the full schedule, download the Conference app or visit our website

At the OPPI Hub, we are asking members to help the Institute develop a vision of the planning system for the 21st century. As we celebrate the past 25 years of RPP, we are also looking forward to the next 25 years, and beyond, to make this vision a reality for future RPPs. The questions we are seeking answers to are as follows:
  • If you had one wish that would be granted in a new planning system for Ontario what would it be?
  • In our new vision of planning in the 21st century, what other jurisdications/planning systems should we emulate, and why?
  • How can OPPI ensure the public and Indigenous Peoples have a meaningful role to play in the development of this vision?
If you aren't able to attend OPPI19: Beyond25 but would like to provide your answers for consideration, please email submissions@ontarioplanners.ca

OPPI would like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and support of OPPI19: Beyond25. We would also like to thank our speakers and the many volunteers who will help make this conference the best one yet!

Your Professional Journey

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWEST RPPS!
Each year, OPPI welcomes many new RPPs as members from a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience. Only Full Members of OPPI are authorized to use the RPP designation in Ontario.

Our newest RPPs followed and completed the certification process administered by the Professional Standards Board and will be receiving their certificates allowing them to practice as RPPs in Ontario.

We applaud your achievement, dedication and commitment to informing choices and guiding the public, decision makers and stakeholders on the journey to creating inspired communities. Learn more about our newest RPPs by visiting OPPI's website

Building RPP

HONOURING THOSE WHO HELPED PASS THE OPPI ACT IN 1994

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the RPP designation this year, OPPI would like to acknowledge and thank the members that assisted with the passage of the OPPI Act on December 9, 1994. This list includes Tony Usher, RPP, Mark Dorfman, RPP, George Rich, RPP, Joe Snizek, RPP and Phillip Wong, RPP.

OPPI would like to thank these members, and those who volunteered at the time, for your hard work and dedication in getting the OPPI Act passed. As part of marking this milestone, in the latest issue of Y Magazine, OPPI discussed this milestone with Tony Usher, RPP, and Mark Dorfman, RPP, about what was happening at the time with OPPI and moving the planning profession forward by having legislation to enhance the planning profession.

Members can log into their member profile to read the latest issue of Y Magazine and can visit our blog to read the continuing conversation.

Knowledge Exchange

THE CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY OF UNEVEN GROWTH
Our October Planning Exchange blog provides members with a preview of Day 1 Keynote Speaker, City of Toronto Chief Planner, Gregg Lintern, RPP, MCIP, and his session on "The Challenge and Opportunity of Uneven Growth." Learn more from Toronto's top planner about how planning and implementing a form of city that responds more directly to the lenses of affordability, mobility, and resilience - you might call them  Toronto's collective values - is already part of the city's "story" and the story of so many other places, even as people's experiences with growth vary greatly.
