203 - No easy answers: A frank discussion about wins, challenges, and opportunities in affordable housing

September 23, 2020

4:15PM - 5:15PM

Using lessons learned from recently built and nearly constructed rental buildings, York Region Housing Development staff have unique perspectives as developers of mixed-income and affordable housing in in Ontario. With the barriers of the cost and availability of land in the GTA, the pressures of an aging population facing housing security issues, and a built form rooted in suburban and rural growth patterns, York Region presents a perfect storm of challenges for meeting affordable housing needs.

From designing universally accessible homes on a budget, financial modelling with public funding, and navigating local municipal requirements, York Region Housing Development has seen its share of difficult questions and has crafted creative solutions. A key finding of our work has been the value of open, honest discussion with a wide range of housing and planning professionals who can become project champions. York Region Housing is committed to a collaborative and evidence-based approach to developing new communities, and attendees will help build that knowledge base and participate in discussions that get to the real issues. In this fishbowl format session, specific case studies will be examined, and presenters will ask probing questions to elicit thoughtful responses and share their stories and ideas to help us work towards finding those elusive answers.

Affordable housing is hard. Let’s talk about it.
