108 - School board and municipal planners: Knowledge sharing and effective communication

October 07, 2020

12:30PM - 1:30PM

School board planners and municipal planners work towards the same common goal: safe, complete, engaging communities. The legislative frameworks under which each these distinct sets of planners operate are different though, and this can lead to challenges in reaching that common goal. This session aims to bridge some of the knowledge and communication gaps with a specific focus on the provision of new schools within transforming communities.

The session begins by establishing a common understanding of the planning framework that guides school board planning. Participants will gain an understanding of the timelines and processes at school board and more senior levels of government. Case studies highlight the opportunities and challenges that exist within this framework. Participants then have an opportunity to participate in a mock planning session to investigate the impact of changes in residential development and local demographics on a theoretical, stable community. Through this activity, participants will better understand the uncertainties that arise in studying the impact of changing land use patterns on student accommodation. A debriefing will follow to foster an appreciation of the value that improved and increased communication between school board planners and municipal planners can have on the process.
