Making places for seniors in our communities

PRINT THIS PAGE

Seniors are the fastest growing age group in Ontario, forecasted to increase from 17% of the population in 2016 to 24% by 2046. It’s a complex and dynamic cohort, something not captured by the handy “seniors” catch phrase. When it comes to housing for seniors, the interplay between planning for housing and demographics is particularly challenging for planners. Do planners necessarily translate the demographics of aging into their community planning? Does their placemaking actually make the appropriate places that address the real characteristics and housing needs of seniors and an aging population? How should the planning toolbox be recast to better address the evolving and growing housing needs of seniors?

Learn about the challenges this aging demographic creates for planners together with the implications for planning practice and creating age-friendly communities. We will discuss whether planners need to change their assumptions about seniors and their housing needs, as well as some of the current planning obstacles to addressing this demographic’s needs.
